Avon Books - A Brief History

Avon Publications was founded in 1941 by the American News Company as a paperback publisher. It started with a focus on comics, but then expanded to include a wide range of genres, particularly romance.

Today, Avon is an imprint of HarperCollins which also owns Harlequin. Their Diamond Anniversary celebration is underway.

Avon Publications

Avon Books was a major rival to the more literary Pocket Book Company in the early days of the paperback publishing industry. Avon published romances, westerns and mysteries with attractive covers. Their books were more affordable than the Pocket books and were targeted at women who could read between cooking and cleaning.

In addition to paperbacks of standard size, Avon also published digest-format papers (the size of contemporary short story magazines) in series like Murder Mystery Monthly and Avon Fantasy Reader. These editions contain many authors that are prized today by collectors. They include A. Merritt and James M. Cain as well as H. P. Lovecraft.

Avon sold more than 20 million books per year until the mid-1950s. Their 25-cent "G" series contained the most popular genres of westerns, whodunits, and the boy-meets girl stories that were so prevalent in the era of the boy-meets-girl stories. Avon also had a 35-cent "T" series that featured the classics of mystery, science fiction and the like.

The emphasis of the company on popularity resulted in them publishing ghost stories, sexually-suggestive love stories, and fantasy novels in its early years, which were far removed from the more literary Pocket competition. In 1959, Avon book June 2023 Avon was bought by the Hearst Corporation and the focus shifted toward more mainstream literature.

Today, Avon is the world's largest woman-centric beauty and fiction business with a presence across five continents and over 100 countries. Avon Impulse

The company was founded in 1941. Avon began as a paperback book and comic book publisher. Later, they became a specialist in romance novels. Joseph Meyers and Edna Meyers Williams founded the company. Meyers employed sisters and brothers to staff the company. He wanted to create an alternative to Pocket Books. They created this by printing low-cost paperbacks that had an appeal to the masses, with stunning cover designs.

Avon reached its peak as a publisher of romance novels in the 1970s. They published Kathleen Woodiwiss's sexy novel, The Flame and the Flower which stayed for 33 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Rosemary Rogers' sexy novels, Sweet Savage Love and Wicked Loving Lies, were also published. This was the first time that a single title had topped the charts for this genre.

The company was purchased by Hearst Corporation in 1959. Hearst would put a focus on the romance offerings of the company which led to it growing into one of the largest publishers of this genre. The company continued to release cheap paperbacks in popular themes such as westerns and whodunits. However, the emphasis on romance increased their profitability.

Avon continues to publish romance novels in the present. Avon Impulse is a digital imprint that produces paperbacks and ebooks. The imprint accepts unagented submissions from authors who are amateurs. It also lets authors explore their creative potential without having to worry about the publishing industry's reaction.

Avon Impulse offers a 25 percent royalty on the first 10,000 downloads, and 50 percent on each subsequent sale. The editor edits the book and produces a sexy front cover. It is available in ePub and Kindle formats, in addition.

Avon Women's Fiction

In 1941, Avon Books began life as an imprint of the American News Company and quickly expanded its catalog to include paperback novels and comic books. Avon Thrillers & Suspense

In the world of commercial fiction, Avon Books publishes thrillers and suspense, as well as feel-good general fiction, saga and romance. They house bestselling authors like C.L Taylor, Katerina Diamond and Phillipa Ashley as well as an ever-growing list of emerging authors.

The Flame and the Flower released in 1972 by Kathleen Woodiwiss, launched the modern romance subgenre. It was the first romance on paper published in original format. It was sold for more than two million copies.

Avon continued to dominate the romance market through the 1970s. The 1970s saw the rise of the extravagant cover art and the bodice-ripper. At the time, Avon published a stable of authors known as Love's Leading Ladies, which included Kathleen Woodiwiss, Rosemary Rogers, Johanna Lindsey and Laurie McBain.

In 1999, Avon merged with Harper Collins. Avon's non-romance and hardcover paperback series were transferred to the imprint of Harper Collins' sister company Morrow and left avon sales book as a publisher of romance novels. In the end, the publishing house was renamed Avon Books and today is still an important part of the HarperCollins family. Their catalog has expanded to include more than the classic romance titles but also women's fiction, saga as well as a growing list of suspense and thrillers.

Avon, Ohio has many strange and unusual tales. Avon is a great spot to find a good ghost story or a good scare. Eagle County is full of activities, from haunted restaurants and hotels to alleged Bigfoot sightings. However, you can find plenty of activities that are more practical than supernatural.

The Avon Theater is haunted by the spirit of Gust Constant. He was a patron and businessman of the theater. He passed away in the late 20's. It is said that he is still haunting the grounds and building.
