Avon and Leonie's Relationship

In this book, Heyer turns a common romance convention upside down. While we often see troubled heroes resort to sex, gambling, or drink, this time it's the heroine that is fighting an internal struggle. Leonie has lived as a boy for most of her adult life. She is reluctant to become a woman again. Avon finds her a bit difficult to deal with however Avon can control his usual sarcasm with a grin to take good care of the woman.

One of the things that I really enjoyed about this book was the way Heyer contrasted Leonie's boyish habits with Avon's cool planning and reserved. His calm demeanor is in stark contrast with her impulsive physical reactions and blood-lust. I also enjoyed how he was able to defeat the villain without intimidating the villain or chasing him. Instead, he relied on insinuation.

Another thing that I really liked about this book was how Heyer subtly pointed out women's limitations in this period. Leonie hates trading in her breeches to get layers of skirts and petticoats. she doesn't like riding side-saddle and is constantly shooting villains dead (even though it's a dangerous job). While Avon is somewhat irritated by her erratic ways at first, he soon realizes that she is his favorite.

I did find it difficult to determine who was who in the beginning, since Heyer refers to the Duke by several different names in the initial pages. But once you get it figured out, it becomes much easier to read. This was a fantastic book, and I strongly recommend it! You won't be disappointed regardless of whether you're a Georgette Heyer fan or just like a good romance!

Avon's Relationship with Davenant

Avon is well-known for its beauty products but also provides an earning opportunity and is a leading advocate for women's financial independence. Avon has been around for over 130 years, and has always stood up for innovation and optimism, and, most importantly, for women. He treats Leonie with respect, uses less biting sarcasm, and even dresses her in black to match himself.

Avon is not able anymore, due to his new character to keep Leonie's relationship secret from the Duke. He has also begun to treat Rupert with a little more care, as well. He doesn't try to make her jealous about his relationship with Leonie but he gently informs her to be more careful in her future relationships.
