Avon Books - A Brief History

Avon Publications was founded in 1941 by the American News Company as a paperback publisher. It was initially focused on comic books, but it quickly expanded to include a wide range of genres, especially romance.

Today, Avon is an imprint of HarperCollins which also owns Harlequin. Their Diamond Anniversary celebration is underway.

Avon Publications

In the beginning of paperback publishing, Avon Books was a major rival to the more literary Pocket Book company. Avon published westerns, romances and Avon Book January 2023 mysteries with vibrant covers. Avon is the leading publisher for Sunday Times and Kindle bestsellers. They are a leader in crime, thrillers and suspense. The company is proud to have a an eminent female history and has helped pave the way for women entrepreneurs around the world. It is a leader in marketing, sales and innovation.

Avon Impulse

Founded in 1941, Avon began as a paperback book and comic book publisher. They later shifted their focus to romance novels. Joseph Meyers and Edna Meyers Williams founded the company. Meyers employed sisters and brothers to work for the company. He wanted to create a different product to Pocket Books. They did so by printing more inexpensive paperbacks with a mass appeal and luxurious covers.

Avon reached its height as a romance publisher novels in the 1970s. They released Kathleen Woodiwiss's sexy novel, The Flame and the Flower which stayed for 33 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. They also published the sexy novels of Rosemary Rogers, including Sweet Savage Love and Wicked Loving Lies. These were the first instances that a single title topped the chart for this genre.

The company was bought by Hearst Corporation in 1959. Hearst would put a focus on the company's romance offerings, causing it to grow into one of the biggest publishers of this genre. The company continued to publish inexpensive paperbacks on popular themes, such as westerns and whodunits. However, the emphasis on romance helped increase their profit.

Avon continues to publish romance novels today. The company recently started an online imprint, Avon Impulse, which publishes ebooks and paperbacks. The imprint accepts submissions from writers who aren't represented by an agent. It also allows authors to explore their creative potential without worrying about the publishing industry's reaction.

Avon Impulse offers a 25 percent royalty on the first 10,000 downloads and 50 percent on every subsequent sale. The editor edits the book and designs a sexy front cover. It is available to Kindle and Nook users as well as in the ePub format.

In 1999, Avon merged with Harper Collins. Avon's non-romance and hardcover paperback collections were transferred to the imprint of Harper Collins' sister company Morrow and left Avon as a publisher of romance novels. Avon Books was eventually renamed and is still a significant part of HarperCollins. The catalog now includes more than just classic romances but also women's literature and sagas.
