In this book, Darrow creates an interesting back story for Avon and echoes the jovial style of dialogue that Blake's 7 was known for fairly well but unless you are a fan of the show it's likely not for you. The story is centered around the relationship between Avon, Vila and their mutual respect and disdain for the other's ruthlessness and cowardice.

Avon's soft side is revealed when he makes the tough decisions necessary to protect his team. The characters have plenty of depth, and each has a unique personality that makes them believable. This is a story that will leave you wanting more. The writing is flawless and there's a real feel for the world that it is set. It's an amazing piece of writing by an author at her peak.

The Setting

In addition to offering a wide range of women's fiction, Avon also has a distinct line of crime and thrillers, as well as a growing list of children's literature. It is the publisher of the bestselling CL Taylor and Katerina Diamond, among many other authors.

Avon's commitment to bringing the best of commercial fiction to the largest possible audience remains today. Avon sold millions of books each year in the 1950s. Their vibrant covers and mass-market appeal allowed them to sell the type of pulp fiction the mainstream publishing houses considered to be a scourge. In fact, they were so successful that they were bought by the Hearst Corporation in 1959.

Hearst Corporation changed Avon's direction by adding more literary works to its catalog. Avon also began to release digest-format paperbacks in series like Murder Mystery Monthly and Modern Short Story Monthly. Some of these are highly prized today due to their rarity and quality.

The publication in 1972 of Kathleen Woodiwiss' sexually explicit novel, The Flame and the Flower was a major change in direction for Avon. They would publish a number of additional sexy romance novels including 1974's The Wolf and the Dove and later Rosemary Rogers' Sweet Savage Love. These new releases made the previous romances with a purple-colored prosed of earlier Avon romances appear more to be a bit tame.

In the end, Avon would become a leader in the romance industry and even invent the bodice ripper. In the 1970s Avon had multiple romance novels earn and keep places on bestseller lists. This trend continued into the new avon book millennium with Avon publishing authors such as Lisa Kleypas and Connie Mason.

Avon recently expanded its product line with the launch of Avon Impulse, a new imprint that will release e books on a weekly schedule.
