Avon Books - A Brief History

Avon Publications was founded in 1941 by the American News Company as a paperback publisher. It was initially focused on comics, avon book November but then changed to include a variety of genres, particularly romance.

Today, Avon is an imprint of HarperCollins which also owns Harlequin. Their Diamond Anniversary is currently underway.

Avon Publications

In the early days of paperback publishing Avon Books was a major rival to the more literary Pocket Book company. Avon focused on mass-market appeal and published westerns, mysteries and romances with attractive covers. The books were less expensive than the more expensive Pocket books and they were targeted at women in the home, who would have time to read between cooking and cleaning.

In addition to paperbacks of standard size, Avon also published digest-format papers (the size of modern short-story magazines) in series such as Murder Mystery Monthly and Avon Fantasy Reader. These editions contained many authors coveted by collectors of the present, including A. Merritt, James M. Cain and avon book November H. P. Lovecraft.

Avon sold more than 20 million books per year until the mid-1950s. The 25-cent "G series contained popular genres like westerns, whodunits, and boy-meets girl stories. Avon also had a 35 cent "T" series that featured the usual suspects like mystery, science fiction, and the like.

The company's emphasis on popularity led them to publish ghost stories, sexually suggestive love stories and fantasy novels in its early days that were a far cry from the somewhat more literary Pocket competition. In 1959, Avon was bought by the Hearst Corporation and the focus moved to more mainstream fiction.

Today, Avon is the world's largest women-centric beauty and fiction company with a presence across five continents and over 100 countries. They are a leading publisher of Sunday Times and Kindle bestsellers, focusing on thrillers, crime suspense, uplifting general fiction and saga. The company is proud to have an eminent female history and has helped open the way for women to become entrepreneurs across the world. It is a global leader in sales, marketing and innovation, and is making an impact on the world's communities.

Avon Impulse

Avon was founded in 1941. Avon began as a comic book publisher. They later shifted their focus to romance novels. The company was created by Joseph Meyers and Edna Meyers Williams. Meyers employed his brothers and sisters as employees. He wanted to create an alternative to Pocket Books. They did this by printing more inexpensive paperbacks with a mass appeal and luxurious covers.

In the 1970s, Avon was at its peak as a romance book publisher. They released Kathleen Woodiwiss's sexy novel, The Flame and the Flower which stayed for 33 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Rosemary Rogers' sexy novels, Sweet Savage Love and Wicked Loving Lies, were also published. This was the first time an individual novel was a top seller in this genre.

Hearst Corporation purchased the company in 1959. Hearst focused on the company's romance offerings and it grew to become one of the largest publishers of this genre. The company continued to release inexpensive paperbacks with popular themes like westerns and whodunits. However, the emphasis on romance helped increase their profit.

Avon still publishes romance novels. The company recently started an imprint on digital media called Avon Impulse, which publishes ebooks and paperbacks. The imprint accepts unagented submissions by amateur authors. Authors are able to explore their creative potential without worrying about the reaction of the publishing industry.

Avon Impulse offers a 25 percent royalty on the first 10,000 downloads and 50 percent on all subsequent sales. The publisher also edits the book and provides a sexy cover. The book is available in ePub and Kindle formats, as well.

Avon Women's Fiction

The company was founded in 1941. Avon Books began life as an imprint of the American News Company and quickly expanded its catalog to include paperback books and comic books. This group included Kathleen Woodiwiss and Rosemary Rogers. Johanna Lindsey, Laurie McBain and Johanna Lindsey were also part of this group of writers.

In 1999, Avon merged with Harper Collins. Avon's non-romance softcover and paperback collections were transferred to Morrow, which is the sister imprint of the company. This left Avon publishing romance novels. Avon Books was eventually renamed and is still a significant part of HarperCollins. Their catalog has expanded to include more than the classic romances, but also women's fiction, saga and an increasing number of suspense novels and thrillers.

Avon, Ohio is home to many strange and unusual stories. Avon is a great spot to get a good ghost story or a good scare. The Avon theater is haunted by the spirit of Gust Constan. He was a patron and businessman of the theater. He died in the late 20's. There is a rumor that he haunts the building and its grounds today.

According to legend Constan was wealthy and had a stake in Avon. He would buy tickets for his friends and family to go to the latest movies. He also enjoyed going to fashion shows and music concerts in the theater.
