A good robot vacuum can make a big difference in keeping allergens such as pet hair and dust under control. However, not all models are created equal.

1. Eufy RoboVac G30 Edge

The G30 Edge is the newest model in Eufy's budget line robot vacuum cleaners. The G30 Edge is a shiny black vacuum cleaner, with blue and rose gold accents. It's akin to it's a smartphone. This model is easier to use than previous models and comes with features like BoostIQ which automatically increases suction power to ensure better cleaning of all surfaces. It does a very good job of picking up pet hair and crumbs from hard floors, but it is behind the top models when it comes to collecting dust from carpet. In our tests the G30 Edge missed 74% of the flour on hard floors, and 26 percent on carpets, which is disappointing.

The G30 Edge is unique in its ability to map your home using a digital map. This allows it to keep track of which rooms it has already cleaned, and to avoid returning to the same rooms. This is a major problem for the more basic robots that require the use old-fashioned magnetic taps to define areas that are not allowed to be in.

The G30 Edge also has other advantages. It comes with an "Find My Robot" mode that emits loud music until it is located, and a directional keypad that allows you manually move the robot. It also comes with an auto return function that will send it back to its charging base when the battery is empty it is a vital safety feature.

2. Neato Botvac D-Shape

The Neato Botvac D-Shape an extremely capable robot that comes with a plethora of smart features. It can clean floors with ease and climb up carpets with high piles with ease. The app has advanced features, such as boundary lines, remote access to the robot while it is in operation and a host of other options.

This model is the most recent in a long line of Neato robots and is distinguished by its unique "D" shape when seen from above. The design offers a number of advantages, including improved corner-cleaning and a bigger bin of dust than most other models. The D-shape design allows the robot to get under furniture better than those with a circular design.

The Roomba i3+ EVO also does very well in navigating between different flooring types and doesn't get hung over transitions in the way older models can. Dual multi-surface brushes can flex and adapt to different flooring types. They also aren't able to tangle pet hair.

The i3+ EVO has a weaker obstacle avoidance than some of the other robots that we test. It frequently ran into objects like handbags, pet toys and shoes before continuing its path. It also had trouble dealing with salt from kosher, coarse that it blew over and around instead of picking up.

The i3+ EVO includes a number of features that make it worth the extra cost over other Roomba models, including self-emptying bins and advanced control via the app. It is possible to schedule cleaning and set up custom routines. You can also create no-go zones to prevent the robot from entering certain areas. Its smart scheduling will even suggest extra cleanings during allergy seasons and based on the routine you follow. Its navigation system is not reliable however, and often cleans in irregular lines like diagonals or zigzags rather than parallel to walls.

It effortlessly shifted between surfaces during our tests and excelled at getting pet hair off of both hardwood floors and carpets. It also has an edge-sweeping brush to remove cat hair from walls and baseboards, plus the ability to schedule your schedule.

This is a good option if you're looking for an affordable model that comes with additional features. It was able navigate obstacles with ease during our testing and can be controlled by an app or voice. It comes with a large trash bin to collect messes before they're filled. It can take it up to 166 mins to complete its task however, it is more efficient than other robots we have tested.

The front-facing camera on this robot lets you to track the cleanliness of your home's cleanliness on a map using an app. It's particularly helpful if you're trying to find something specific or the children spill glitter from your Christmas decorations all over your floors. It scored a perfect 10 on our cereal carpet test, and passed our test for cat litter with only a couple of scattered pieces. It's less effective on hardwood floors however. The side brush can scatter large pieces of cereal that cling to the floor instead of vacuuming them up. It also had a hard time collecting table salt on unfinished floor, as lots of grains slid across the floor.

It allows voice control via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant via an external device (sold separately). It learns your cleaning habits and provides you with a personalized schedule. Cliff Detect and an edge-sweeping brush ensure that it can get into difficult-to-access corners. Dirt Detect sensors alert it to heavily soiled areas. The battery lasts for about 60 minutes, and it comes with an automatic emptying of the dust bin. The more expensive iRobot J7 comes with a more sophisticated set of features and is better on all surfaces. It also feels better built and has a bigger dust bin that charges faster, and can navigate obstacles such as electrical cords with ease.
